The City of Lee's Summit Missouri was founded in 1865 by a man named William B. Howard. Mr. Howard donated the original 70 acres for the town. The town was originally named Strother. There is some controversy over the spelling of "Lee", some said it was actually spelled "Lea". But the last part of the name "Summit" was believed to be because the city is on the highest point on the railroad between Kansas City and St. Louis.
As with any area, Lee's Summits downtown area is a work in progress. The project was approved in April of 2002. This is the most significant project in Downtown Lee's Summit yet.
The Vision of the Heart, a group made up of dedicated citizens and lots of help from the local community, Lee’s Summit City Planners have designed a new and improved downtown with a much needed state-of-the-art infrastructure.
