While you are in Lee´s Summit be sure to visit the Chamber of Commerce located at 220 SE Main Street Lee´s Summit, Mo. The Chamber is located near an old Caboose in the heart ot the Historic Downtown District.
The City of Lee's Summit Missouri was founded in 1865 by a man named William B. Howard. Mr. Howard donated the original 70 acres for the town. The town was originally named Strother. There is some controversy over the spelling of "Lee", some said it was actually spelled "Lea". But the last part of the name "Summit" was believed to be because the city is on the highest point on the railroad between Kansas City and St. Louis.
Lee´s Summit ranks as the seventh largest city in Missouri in terms of population and in the top fifteen largest cities in the state. In the 2000 Census, Lee´s Summit was second in population growth in the State of Missouri. The population is expected to increase to over 90,000 by 2010 with build-out projected at 175,000 people around 2060.
